About the event
Axminster and District Choral Society presents a beautiful summer concert on Saturday, June 13th, 2026 at 7:30pm at The Minster, Axminster. The programme features Songs of the Fleet by Stanford and the delightful Five Mystical Songs, Vaughan-Williams.
Songs of the Fleet sets five poems by Sir Henry Newbolt for baritone, chorus and orchestra. A companion piece to his earlier Songs of the Sea, it shares Newbolt's stirring celebration of England's naval traditions, though with a more reflective and at times tender character — moving from the rousing departure of "Sailing at Dawn" to the quietly poignant farewell of the closing song. A joy to sing and even better to listen to!
Vaughan Williams composed the Five Mystical Songs between 1906 and 1911, setting five poems by the seventeenth-century Welsh priest and poet George Herbert for baritone, chorus and orchestra. The work was first performed at the Three Choirs Festival in…
